How to Budget for Long-Term Travel

Strategies for funding a gap year, sabbatical, or indefinite travel without running out of money.

The Daily Budget Mindset

When planning a two-week vacation, you budget for the total trip. When planning a 6-month journey, you must shift to a daily budget mindset. Divide your total savings by your expected days, subtract a 20% emergency buffer, and that is your strict daily allowance.

The Big Three Expenses

Your budget will be consumed by three things:

  1. Accommodation (40%): Use hostels, long-term Airbnb rentals (which offer huge monthly discounts), or Workaway/Couchsurfing to slash this cost.
  2. Food (30%): Eating out every meal will drain your funds. The secret to long-term travel is grocery shopping and cooking your own meals at least 50% of the time.
  3. Transport (20%): Slow down. Moving to a new city every two days means constant train/flight tickets. Staying in one place for two weeks drastically reduces your transportation average.

Tracking Every Penny

You cannot succeed at long-term travel without meticulous tracking. Use an app like Trail Wallet, TravelSpend, or our own Trip Budget Calculator to log every coffee, bus ticket, and museum entry. If you go over budget on Tuesday, you eat cheap street food on Wednesday.
