How it works
The calculator determines the exact duration by calculating the mathematical difference in milliseconds between the start and end dates (normalized to UTC to avoid local timezone daylight saving anomalies).
- Inclusive calculation: Both the start date and the end date are counted as full days. E.g., Jan 1 to Jan 2 is 2 days.
- Exclusive calculation: E.g., Jan 1 to Jan 2 is 1 day.
- Nights: Always calculated as calendar days minus one, representing overnight stays.
Worked example
If you depart on Friday, May 5th (inclusive) and return on Sunday, May 14th, the trip is 10 calendar days. You will need accommodation for 9 nights. The trip spans 1 week and 3 days, consisting of 6 weekdays and 4 weekend days.
Limitations
This calculator does not automatically cross-reference visa stay limits (e.g., the Schengen 90/180 day rule). If you are providing specific times across varying time zones, the exact hour duration depends on daylight saving time transitions in those specific zones, which this basic mode simplifies by using absolute hours.
Frequently asked questions
Should I use inclusive or exclusive calculation?
For travel insurance, car rentals, and visa validity, use inclusive calculation. They typically count any part of a day as a full calendar day. For hotel bookings, you usually care about the number of nights.
Does it account for leap years?
Yes. The underlying date math automatically correctly accounts for February 29th during leap years.
